Job Summary

The American Red Cross is seeking a dedicated and proactive Disaster Preparedness Coordinator – Community Outreach to lead local preparedness initiatives and educate communities on emergency readiness. In this role, you will be the bridge between the Red Cross and the communities we serve, designing and delivering programs that empower individuals and groups to be better prepared for disasters. You will collaborate with volunteers, community leaders, and external partners to build resilient neighborhoods across the region.


Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement community disaster education and preparedness programs tailored to diverse populations.

  • Deliver preparedness presentations in schools, community centers, and partner organizations, both virtually and in person.

  • Build and maintain strategic relationships with community organizations, local governments, and emergency management teams.

  • Recruit, train, and supervise volunteers to support outreach efforts.

  • Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of preparedness initiatives and make data-driven improvements.

  • Represent the American Red Cross at public events, fairs, and meetings to promote preparedness resources.

  • Ensure program materials are culturally relevant, accessible, and aligned with national Red Cross guidelines.

  • Respond to and support disaster relief efforts as needed, including occasional deployment during large-scale emergencies.


Required Skills and Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree in Emergency Management, Public Health, Communications, Social Work, or a related field (or equivalent combination of education and experience).

  • Exceptional public speaking, interpersonal, and cross-cultural communication skills.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and virtual presentation tools such as Zoom, Teams, or WebEx.

  • Ability to work independently, manage multiple projects, and meet deadlines.

  • Strong organizational skills with keen attention to detail.

  • Valid drivers license and access to reliable transportation.


Experience

  • Minimum 2 years of experience in community outreach, disaster preparedness, volunteer coordination, or related fields.

  • Experience working with diverse populations and underserved communities is highly desirable.

  • Background in emergency response or nonprofit program management is a plus.


Working Hours

  • Full-time position (typically 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM, Monday to Friday)

  • Flexibility required to work evenings and weekends for community events or during disaster response activations.

  • Occasional travel may be necessary within assigned regions.

  • Strong understanding of disaster preparedness principles and community resilience strategies.

  • Ability to adapt messaging to suit audiences of different ages, languages, and literacy levels.
