Job Summary

Cigna, through its Evernorth Behavioral Health division, is seeking a compassionate and highly motivated Licensed Telephonic Counselor to provide high-quality behavioral health support to members via phone and virtual platforms. This role is ideal for licensed mental health professionals who are passionate about improving emotional well-being, crisis intervention, and care coordination while working in a flexible, remote environment.

The Licensed Telephonic Counselor will deliver short-term counseling, conduct clinical assessments, provide referrals, and support members in navigating behavioral health resources. This position plays a critical role in Cignas mission to make health care more affordable, predictable, and simple for individuals and families.


Key Responsibilities

  • Provide telephonic and virtual counseling services to individuals experiencing emotional, behavioral, or mental health challenges

  • Conduct comprehensive clinical assessments, including risk and crisis evaluations

  • Deliver brief, solution-focused counseling and evidence-based interventions

  • Develop and document individualized care plans and treatment recommendations

  • Identify appropriate referrals and coordinate care with internal and external providers

  • Support members during high-stress or crisis situations with professionalism and empathy

  • Maintain accurate, timely, and compliant clinical documentation

  • Adhere to all ethical standards, licensing regulations, and HIPAA requirements

  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary care teams to ensure continuity of care

  • Participate in ongoing training, supervision, and quality improvement initiatives


Required Skills and Qualifications

  • Active, unrestricted clinical license (LPC, LCSW, LMFT, Psychologist, or equivalent)

  • Strong telephonic and virtual counseling skills

  • Excellent communication, active listening, and interpersonal skills

  • Ability to manage high-volume caseloads while maintaining quality care

  • Proficiency with electronic health records (EHR) and digital platforms

  • Strong problem-solving and critical-thinking abilities

  • High level of professionalism, empathy, and emotional intelligence

  • Ability to work independently in a remote environment


Experience

  • Minimum of 2–5 years of post-licensure clinical counseling experience

  • Experience in behavioral health, employee assistance programs (EAP), crisis counseling, or managed care preferred

  • Prior experience delivering telephonic or virtual counseling services is strongly preferred

  • Experience working with diverse populations and mental health conditions


Working Hours

  • Full-time position (typically 40 hours per week)

  • Flexible scheduling options, including daytime and potential evening shifts

  • Remote/work-from-home opportunity, depending on state licensing requirements

  • May include rotating schedules to support member needs


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Strong knowledge of behavioral health diagnoses, treatment modalities, and crisis intervention
