Job Summary

Cigna is seeking a highly experienced and board-certified Medical Oncologist to join our clinical leadership team as a Medical Director – Medical Oncologist (Clinical Support). In this pivotal role, you will provide expert clinical guidance, medical policy leadership, and evidence-based decision support to ensure high-quality, cost-effective oncology care for our members. You will collaborate closely with multidisciplinary teams, including utilization management, care coordination, pharmacy, and provider networks, to drive optimal clinical outcomes while maintaining regulatory compliance and clinical excellence.


Key Responsibilities

  • Provide clinical expertise and medical leadership in oncology-related utilization management, case reviews, and coverage determinations.

  • Review complex oncology cases, including chemotherapy, immunotherapy, targeted therapies, and advanced cancer treatments, to ensure evidence-based and guideline-driven care.

  • Develop, review, and maintain oncology medical policies and clinical guidelines aligned with national standards (e.g., NCCN, ASCO).

  • Serve as a clinical resource to internal teams, including nurses, pharmacists, and medical management staff.

  • Engage in peer-to-peer consultations with treating physicians to discuss treatment plans and alternative care pathways.

  • Support quality improvement initiatives, clinical audits, and outcomes analysis related to oncology services.

  • Collaborate with pharmacy and specialty drug teams to evaluate oncology regimens, biosimilars, and emerging therapies.

  • Ensure compliance with regulatory, accreditation, and corporate medical governance requirements.

  • Contribute to strategic initiatives aimed at improving access, affordability, and quality of cancer care.


Required Skills and Qualifications

  • MD or DO degree from an accredited medical school.

  • Board Certification in Medical Oncology (or Hematology/Oncology).

  • Active and unrestricted medical license (or eligibility for licensure) in at least one U.S. state.

  • Strong understanding of evidence-based oncology practices and clinical guidelines.

  • Excellent clinical judgment, analytical, and decision-making skills.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including peer-to-peer discussions.

  • Ability to work effectively in a virtual, matrixed, and cross-functional environment.

  • Proficiency with electronic medical records and clinical review systems.


Experience

  • Minimum of 5–10 years of clinical experience in medical oncology, including management of complex cancer cases.

  • Prior experience in utilization management, medical review, health plan, or payer environment is highly preferred.

  • Experience in clinical leadership, medical policy development, or advisory roles is an advantage.

  • Exposure to value-based care models and population health management is desirable.


Working Hours

  • Full-time position, primarily standard business hours (Monday to Friday).

  • Flexible and remote or hybrid work arrangements may be available, depending on business needs.

  • Occasional extended hours may be required to support urgent clinical reviews or organizational priorities.
