Houston Skilled Consultancy is seeking a motivated and technically inclined Linux Desktop Support Intern to join our dynamic IT support team. This is an ideal opportunity for fresh graduates or students with a passion for Linux and open-source technologies to gain hands-on experience in troubleshooting, configuring, and maintaining Linux desktop environments. You will work alongside seasoned professionals and receive structured training while supporting internal users and clients.
Assist with the installation, configuration, and maintenance of Linux desktop systems (Ubuntu, CentOS, Fedora, etc.).
Provide technical support and resolve user issues related to Linux desktops, applications, and networks.
Troubleshoot hardware and software problems in collaboration with senior IT staff.
Manage user accounts, permissions, and security settings.
Assist in writing and maintaining documentation for internal knowledge base.
Support system upgrades, patches, and backups under guidance.
Participate in virtual team meetings and contribute to support planning.
Monitor system performance and report potential issues proactively.
Basic understanding of Linux operating systems and command-line interface (CLI).
Familiarity with desktop environments such as GNOME or KDE.
Good problem-solving and analytical skills.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Strong communication skills (written and verbal).
Currently pursuing or recently completed a degree in Computer Science, IT, or a related field.
No prior work experience required.
Prior personal or academic exposure to Linux (e.g., using Linux at home, in labs, or coursework) is a plus.
Interns with GitHub profiles or open-source contributions will be given preference.
Flexible part-time hours: 15–20 hours/week
Monday to Friday (adjustable to academic schedule if needed)
Remote work with periodic team check-ins
Understanding of basic networking concepts (IP, DNS, DHCP).
Awareness of system logs and tools such as top, htop, journalctl, dmesg.
Willingness to learn shell scripting and automation basics.
Detail-oriented with a proactive attitude.
Ability to adapt quickly to new tools and environments.
